Before Departure

Spiritual & Practical Preparation

The journey begins long before the flight. Purify your intentions (Niyyah), seek forgiveness from those you may have wronged, and settle debts where you can. Prepare physically for walking, heat, and late-night prayers.

  • checkConfirm passport validity (usually 6+ months), visa, and vaccination certificates.
  • checkMake photocopies of your passport, visa, and hotel vouchers; keep one set in your hand luggage.
  • checkLearn the Talbiyah and a few short duas so you are not dependent on a book in crowded spaces.

Entering the State

Assuming Ihram at Miqat

Upon reaching or flying over the Miqat boundary, you enter the sacred state of Ihram. This involves specific rituals of cleansing, wearing the simple unstitched white garments (for men), and reciting the Talbiyah continuously.

The Talbiyah

“Labbayk, Allahumma Labbayk. Labbayk, La Shareeka laka Labbayk. Innal-Hamda wanni'mata laka wal-Mulk, La Shareeka lak.”

In Ihram, avoid:

  • Scented soap, perfume, and scented wipes
  • Cutting hair or nails, and hunting
  • Covering a man's head or a woman's face with niqab (according to the school you follow — ask your guide)
  • Marital relations until Umrah is complete

The Sacred Precinct

Tawaf Al-Umrah

Upon entering Masjid al-Haram, perform Tawaf by circling the Kaaba seven times counter-clockwise, beginning at the Black Stone (Hajar al-Aswad). Keep your heart focused on supplication.

Maqam Ibrahim & Zamzam

Pray two Rakaat behind Maqam Ibrahim, followed by drinking Zamzam water.

Between the Hills

Sa'i Between Safa and Marwah

Walk seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwah, commemorating Hajar's search for water for her son Ismail. Begin at Safa, end at Marwah. One way is one lap — seven laps finish on Marwah.

Green light zone

Men may hasten between the green markers, following the sunnah. Women walk at a calm pace. Wheelchairs and electric carts are available on the upper levels.

After Sa'i

There is no extra tawaf required after Sa'i for Umrah. Proceed to Halq or Taqsir to exit Ihram. Drink Zamzam when you can; it is available throughout the mosque.

05
Leaving Ihram

Halq or Taqsir

Complete Umrah by shaving the head (Halq) or trimming the hair (Taqsir). This exits Ihram. Licensed barbers operate near the Haram; our group leaders will show you the nearest reliable shops.

  • manMen: shaving the whole head is preferred; trimming all around is also valid.
  • womanWomen: trim a small fingertip's length from the hair. This is done privately, not at a public barber.
  • favoriteAfter this, all Ihram restrictions lift. You may change into regular clothes and use perfume again.

Worship First

Shopping and sightseeing can wait. Use the first days for Umrah, extra tawaf, and Quran. Our Ziyarat is scheduled so it does not replace your time in the mosque.
